The "Move Over" Law
GS 20-157 also known as the "Move Over" law. In brief, upon the approach of an emergency vehicle you MUST pull to the right and stop. This includes the oncoming traffic unless you are on a highway with a divided median. It is also unlawful to follow closer than 400 feet or park within 400 feet of any Fire Apparatus on a call. It is further unlawful to drive over a fire hose being used or block the source of water supply for an apparatus. You must slow your vehicle at a reduced speed when emergency vehicles are within 12 feet of the roadway on an emergency call if you are on a two-lane. If you are on a two-lane road, you need to move to the lane that is not being used by the emergency personal or apparatus and pass at a slow speed.
